Plant Introduction
Rhodiola rosea (also known as Arctic root or golden root) is one of the plants in the Sedaceae family, which is native to the Arctic Circle in Eastern Siberia. Rhodiola rosea is widely distributed in polar and mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. It mostly grows above an altitude of 11000 to 18000 feet. Rhodiola was classified by Soviet scientists as an adaptogen due to its ability to increase various chemical, biological, and physical stress responses. The term adaptation originated in 1947, proposed by a Soviet scientist named Lazarev. He defined an 'adaptogen' as a drug that can neutralize adverse physical, chemical, or biological stress in an organism by generating non-specific resistance. Rhodiola was extensively studied in the Soviet Union and Scandinavia for over 35 years. Similar to other plant adaptogens studied by Soviet scientists, Rhodiola extract resulted in beneficial changes in various physiological functions across different fields, including neurotransmitter levels, central nervous system activity, and cardiovascular function.
history
Rhodiola was once used as a traditional herb in the Carpathian region of China, Siberia, and Ukraine. In the former Soviet Union, it was used as a type of adaptogen to reduce fatigue and enhance the body's natural resistance to various stresses. There is a rumor in Siberia that 'drinking Sedum tea consistently can lead to a lifespan of over 100 years'. Rhodiola has traditionally been used for male and female sexual dysfunction. In the former Soviet Union, a popular preparation of this herb was a tincture called "Nastojka", which was made by mixing fresh Rhodiola root with 40% alcohol and leaving it for a week. One teaspoon of "Nastojka" after each meal is used as a prescription for patients with sexual dysfunction. In Siberia, especially during the cold and humid winter, people often take Rhodiola rosea to prevent diseases. In Mongolia, it is used for the treatment of tuberculosis and cancer.
function
Rhodiola mainly contains phenylpropanoids and flavonoids. Its unique active chemical components are phenylpropanoids, rosavin (the most active), rosin, rosarin, rhodiolin, salidroside, and its aglycone [1], namely tyrosol. Only Rhodiola rosea contains rosavin, rosin, and rosarin.
Enhance immune function
Rosavins stimulate the immune system through two pathways: firstly, by directly stimulating the immune defense (stimulating one of the most important types of immune cells: natural killer cells). NK cells search for and destroy infected cells in the body. Rhodiola extract restores the normal immune system by improving T-cell immunity. This shows that it can enhance the body's resistance to the accumulated toxins caused by the gradual development of infection. 2、 Make the body less susceptible to pressure. When we are exposed to stress for a long time and constantly extract energy from other systems, the overall impact is a decrease in immune response and deterioration of health. Rhodiola extract can also enhance B cell immunity by preventing inhibition caused by stress and fatigue.
Melancholic feeling
In animal experiments, extracts of Rhodiola rosea called rosavin and salidroside showed an increase in the speed of serotonin precursor, tryptophan, and 5-hydroxytryptophan transport into the brain. Serotonin is a widely studied neurotransmitter in the brain that has multiple chemical functions. Unstable serotonin is associated with various abnormal mental states such as clinical depression. Therefore, Rhodiola rosea was used by Soviet scientists alone or mixed with antidepressants to enhance people's mental state, becoming a valuable medicine for those living in countries and seasons where they did not receive sufficient sunlight due to prolonged monthly cycles. For example, SAD stands for Seasonal Depression, which is more common in Nordic countries. In a publicly available clinical trial to test the efficacy of Rhodiola extract in reducing depressive symptoms, 128 patients were given Rhodiola extract. Rhodiola extract effectively reduced or eliminated depressive symptoms in 65% of patients.
Protecting cardiovascular function
Rhodiola extract has been shown to alleviate stress-induced cardiovascular tissue damage and functional disorders. Rhodiola extract can prevent a decrease in cardiac contractility caused by environmental pressure during rapid freezing and help stabilize contractility. It seems that preprocessing with Rhodiola rosea can trigger beneficial adaptive responses to this type of stress. When mice taking Hongjing were exposed to rapid freezing, the decrease in cardiac contractility was prevented, and the stable contractility of cardiac tissue continued to occur during perfusion.
Other reports suggest that the use of Rhodiola extract can protect the cardiovascular tissue of rats under stress-induced catecholamine release and alleviate adrenaline induced arrhythmia. The anti arrhythmic effect of Rhodiola extract is believed to be a secondary effect of its ability to induce opioid peptide biosynthesis and involves the activation of peripheral kappa opioid receptors. Rhodiola extract has also shown therapeutic effects on heart problems caused or exacerbated by stress. The effect on these situations is based on its ability to reduce the total amount of catecholamines and steroids released by the adrenal gland due to stress. The abnormal secretion of these stress hormones can lead to an increase in blood pressure, cholesterol, potassium levels, and an increased risk of heart disease. Rhodiola has been found to lower harmful blood lipids and thus reduce the risk of heart disease. It also reduced the total amount of circulating AMP (c-AMP) released into heart cells. Circulating AMP and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) are the main energy supplying molecules in the human body. C-AMP acts as a 'second messenger' or a connecting substance between the intracellular and extracellular environments. It helps to facilitate the influx of intracellular calcium into the heart, greatly enhancing the potential energy of cardiac muscle contraction. Rhodiola rosea regulates heart rate and prevents arrhythmia as a result.
Potent antioxidant
Rhodiola rosea has effective antioxidant capacity [1]. By limiting the adverse effects of free radical damage, it can effectively resist diseases caused by aging.
Enhance human function
Just like Siberian ginseng, Rhodiola extract is often taken by athletes to enhance human function. Although its mechanism is not fully understood, it appears to improve muscle/fat ratio and increase levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the blood.
antitumor activity
Taking Rhodiola extract has shown potential as an anti-cancer drug and may be highly effective when used in combination with several anti-tumor drugs. Transplanting fixed Ehrlich adenocarcinoma and metastatic mouse Plis lymphoma to mice, supplementing with Rhodiola extract inhibited the growth of all types of tumors, reduced liver metastasis, and prolonged survival time.. Taking it can directly inhibit the growth and metastasis range of Lewis lung malignant tumors after transplantation. When the extract of Rhodiola rosea is combined with the anti-tumor drug cyclophosphamide to treat the same tumor model, the anti-tumor and anti metastatic effects of the drug are effectively enhanced. The presence of free radicals is directly related to cell mutations, which are the cause of cancer. In addition, Soviet scientists found that oral administration of Rhodiola inhibited tumor growth in 39% of experimental rats and reduced metastasis in 50% of rats. It can improve the urinary tissue and immunity of patients with bladder cancer. In experiments on other cancers, including adenocarcinoma (adenocarcinoma of glandular tissue such as breast cancer) and lung malignancies. The extract of Rhodiola rosea resulted in a significant increase in survival rate.
Enhance sexual function
In Russian and Far Eastern cultures, the use of Rhodiola extract to enhance sexual performance has a long history. In an open clinical trial involving 35 men suffering from erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, or both, treated with 100-150mg Rhodiola extract for 3 months, 26 out of 35 patients admitted to substantial improvement in their sexual function.
Enhance memory
In a controlled placebo experiment on the effects of Rhodiola extract on intellectual performance, 120 individuals were employed for a validation study. The subjects underwent experiments before and after taking Rhodiola extract or placebo. The records of the experimental group showed significant improvement, while the controlled group remained unchanged. The members of both groups were continuously tested for their ability to complete the proofreading experiment within 24 hours of taking the extract or placebo. The number of misspellings in the controlled group significantly increased during the school experiment, while the functional decline range of the group taking Rhodiola extract was much smaller.
dose
Even at high doses, the potential toxicity of Rhodiola extract is only a quarter of that of Korean ginseng. In a double-blind clinical trial, the dosage range of standard Rhodiola extract was between 100-170mg per day, and the amount of rosavin contained therein was approximately 3.6-6.14mg. The therapeutic dose of pre made Rhodiola rosea should be determined based on the degree of standardization; Anyway, as a long-term medication, the dosage of rosavin within the above range appears to be cautious. The recommended dosage is approximately 360-600mg of Rhodiola extract containing standard 1% rosavin or 100-170mg of extract containing standard 3.6% rosavin per day. As a type of adaptogen, long-term use of it should generally be taken several weeks in advance to enhance physiological, chemical, and biological stress, and persisted during the duration of adverse reactions or activity. When taking Rhodiola rosea alone for acute use (such as testing or athlete competition). The recommended dosage is three times that for long-term use.
Security
If the dosage exceeds 800mg per day, it may cause the following side effects: allergies, insomnia, and discomfort. No other side effects were found.
chemical composition
Nearly 200 different species of Sedum have been identified. Only 14 of them have undergone biochemical research and it has been found that the chemical composition and pharmacological activity of Rhodiola rosea are significantly related to their species. Its unique chemical active ingredients are rosavin (the most active), rosin, rosarin, rhodiolin, and salidroside. Only Rhodiola rosea contains rosavin, rosin, and rosarin.

plant extracts
Rhodiola glycoside is a compound extracted from the dried roots, rhizomes, or whole plants of the Sedum family. It has functions such as preventing tumors, enhancing immune function, delaying aging, anti fatigue, anti hypoxia, anti radiation, bidirectional regulation of the central nervous system, and repairing and protecting the body. It is usually used for the treatment of chronic diseases and weak and susceptible patients. Clinically used to treat neurasthenia and neurosis, improve attention and memory, high altitude erythrocytosis, and hypertension; As an excitatory nerve agent, it is used to improve intelligence, alleviate autonomic vascular tension disorders such as muscle weakness, etc; Used for diseases with increased free radicals, such as tumors, radiation damage, emphysema, elderly cataracts, etc; Also used as a strengthening agent for erectile dysfunction, etc; Rhodiola glycoside preparations are also used in sports medicine and aerospace medicine for the health protection of workers under various special environmental conditions.
Rhodiola rosea has both adaptive and bidirectional regulatory effects. Mice exposed to microwave radiation showed inhibitory changes in monoamine neurotransmitters, adenosine monophosphate in the spleen and thymus, lymphocyte transformation rate, serum hemolysin, etc. Rhodiola can restore them to normal. After injection of salidroside, it can enhance the thyroid and adrenal functions of rabbits and stimulate the endocrine function of mouse eggs. Improve attention and memory. Raise the level of β - indolol in plasma and prevent changes in stress hormones.
pharmacological action
1. Anti fatigue effect: Oral administration of Narrow leaved Red Scenery Angel mice prolongs pole climbing time, swimming time, and load swimming time. It can shorten the time required for recovery after fatigue, increase enzyme, RNA, and protein levels, and enable muscles to recover as soon as possible after fatigue.
2. The effect on central nervous system mediators: Rhodiola rosea can normalize the content of serotonin in mice under swimming conditions, that is, the content of central nervous system mediators in sand dunes has been corrected or reached normal levels. Injecting salidroside (30-300mg/kg) into mice can reduce the level of serotonin.
3. Anti hypoxia effect: Oral administration of extracts from Rhodiola rosea, Rhodiola rosea var. angustifolia, and Rhodiola rosea var. angustifolia can significantly counteract various hypoxia modes in experimental animals, with a stronger effect than ginseng and Acanthopanax senticosus.
4. Anti aging effect: The alcohol extract of Rhodiola rosea can increase the activity of SOD in red blood cells and liver of rats, and has a tendency to increase the activity of SOD in myocardium. Drinking Rhodiola rosea extract can significantly prolong the lifespan of the red field flaxseed fly, with a higher lifespan extension rate than ginseng. Rhodiola rosea promotes the proliferation of 2BS cells and reduces mortality, and can inhibit lipid peroxidation in rat cells and enhance the activity of serum superoxide dismutase.
5. Antitumor effect: Rhodiola rosea has a certain inhibitory effect on S180 cells, and within the non-toxic dose range, this effect increases with increasing concentration. Continuous oral administration of Rhodiola extract can reduce the degree of carcinogenic damage caused by erythromycin to the small intestine wall of mice and improve the body's anti-cancer ability.
6. Detoxification effect: Rhodiola rosea glycoside has an antagonistic effect on Shidianing poisoning and can increase the survival rate of mice after Shidianing poisoning by 50%; It also has the effect of antagonizing rod-shaped bacterial toxins and can counteract various bacterial toxins such as tetanus, increasing the survival time or rate of mice taking strong poisons, sodium cyanide, and sodium nitrite.
